Pistol 02 – Defensive Handgun Skills
Practical Pistol 2 is the next step in your handgun training. Building on your core marksmanship skills, this course introduces the techniques and mindset needed for defensive shooting. You’ll work on retention and tactical reloads, defensive shot placement, multiple-shot engagements, drawing while moving off the “X,” and shooting on the move.
This is an advanced-level course. All students must be fully competent, properly equipped, and able to work safely both downrange and at the loading tables.
Course Objectives
Students will:
Review and reinforce universal firearm safety
Understand defensive shot placement and the balance of speed vs. precision
Learn to perform a tactical reload
Develop skills for shooting on the move
Practical Skills Covered
Drawing and engaging with multiple accurate shots
Retention and tactical reloads
Getting off the “X” (moving off the line of attack)
Shooting on the move and engaging targets dynamically
Class Format
1 hour classroom instruction
Remaining time on the live-fire range
Required Equipment
Personal handgun
Eye and ear protection
Rigid gun belt
Outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster, strong-side only
Not allowed: IWB, cross-draw, appendix, shoulder, etc.
No nylon, cloth, or SERPA-style holsters
Magazine pouch(es) that securely hold 2 magazines
No nylon or cloth pouches
Three (3) properly functioning magazines
150–250 rounds of range-approved ammunition
Prerequisite
Successful completion of Pistol 01 (or equivalent, with prior approval)
